Many Binghamton University students spend their summers in their hometown and relax after finishing another trying school year. Jennifer Seibert, however, spent her last summer dealing with cyberattacks.
According to a report by Chris Kocher of BingUNews, Seibert spent his summer helping to investigate cache attacks, which use stored user data and could contain personal user information. During his time with the Carnegie Mellon University program, Seibert would create applications impersonating the victim and write attacker code used against the victim so that an architecture could be built to protect the victim from the attacker’s code. the attacker.
“An adversary can enter the cache to track the victim and extract encryption information,” Seibert said. “With our architecture, you can track cache misses, which can be a good indication if there’s an attacker in the cache.”
As the world continues to rely more on the internet in all aspects of life, cybersecurity has become one of the most important industries in the world. Just weeks ago, Governor Kathy Hochul appointed the first-ever Chief Cyber Officer in New York to lead the strengthening of state cybersecurity protocols. Cybersecurity attacks can be very difficult to detect and very costly for both businesses and individuals.
According to Kocher’s report, in addition to the program she took last summer, Seibert works as a software engineering intern at a defense company and is heavily involved on the Binghamton campus. She is a member of a professional sorority for female engineers, Binghamton Codes, which teaches coding to students in other fields, and Girls Who Code, which teaches elementary through high school girls how to code, an organization of which she will serve as president. . this school year.
