CUE revokes recognition of Sakaja’s team’s university degree –

The Commission for University Education (CUE) has revoked the recognition of Johnson Sakaja’s degree from Team University.

In a statement to newsrooms, CUE said it did not recognize the team’s University in Uganda degree, adding it would continue to investigate the matter.

“Therefore, in accordance with CUE’s recognition procedures, we hereby revoke the recognition of your degree from the aforementioned university,” said CUE President Chacha Nyaigoti Chacha.

For more than a week now, Sakaja has been the victim of a social media war over allegations that he has not graduated and therefore cannot run for governor of Nairobi. The Kenyan constitution stipulates that a person running for governor must hold a degree from a recognized university.

So, Sakaja would not have a degree as he has not yet graduated from the University of Nairobi. With the pressure on him, Sakaja presented a University degree to the Uganda team.

The documents presented were, however, reviewed with four petitions filed with the IEBC to bar the senator from running for the country’s seat.

A complainant told the IEBC on Monday that the diploma of aspiring Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja was printed on Sunday May 29 this year.

Wahome, in his supporting affidavit, told the IEBC Dispute Resolution Committee that the degree certificate was printed on said date at 10 p.m.

The plaintiff said an information technology (IT) forensic investigation can confirm the same.

He told the committee that the university halted the course in 2015, a year before Sakaja was supposed to graduate.

He added that between 2012 and 2016, when Sakaja claimed to be studying, he only visited Uganda once, on October 17, 2014.

Wahome said Teams University’s graduation booklet dated October 26, 2016 showed that only six students graduated from the class Sakaja claims to have graduated with.

“I am aware that none of the six individuals graduating from Team University on October 21, 2016 has ever heard or seen the 1st Responder as their classmate, physically or virtually,” he said, adding that the degree of Bachelor of Science in Management (External) was non-existent.

Sakaja’s claims that he graduated from the University of Nairobi, according to Wahome, are incorrect.

Wahome claimed that his follow-up at the institution revealed no evidence that Sakaja had graduated from college.

He mentions a situation where the alleged academic credentials of Sakaja from St Lawrence University (SLAU) Uganda came into question.

He said the university denied ever conferring a degree on the Nairobi senator.

According to Wahome’s statement, the University of Nairobi responded to the Kenyan High Commission in Kampala on June 8, 2022, saying that Sakaja had never been a student at the university in its 12-year history.

Wahome and three other plaintiffs petitioned the IEBC to revoke Sakaja’s clearance to run for governor of Nairobi.

Meanwhile, Sakaja argues that her Team University degree is legit.

The plaintiffs, he claimed, omitted his name from the list of graduates.
