Funeral mass set for Western University student killed in parking lot

A funeral mass will be held Wednesday in Sault Ste. Marie for Western University student Maija Nenonen, who died in a collision in a Western Road parking lot on Monday.

In Sault Ste. A native of Marie, Nenonen, 21, was killed when she was hit by a vehicle in the parking lot of the townhouse complex at 974 Western Rd. where she lived. She was a freshman at the Ivey Business School at Western.

Nenonen is survived by his parents Michael and Pina Nenonen and his brother Mika, according to an obituary published Thursday.

Tours take place in Sault Ste. Marie’s Northwood Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Center Tuesdays 5-9 p.m. A funeral mass will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Gregory Catholic Church.

“Although she was taken from us far too soon, we know that her 21 years with us have been full of love, laughter and a lifetime full of memories that we will continue to cherish and share,” reads- one in the obituary.

In an interview with the London Free Press on Tuesday, her mother, Pina Nenonen, said that as a secondary school student, her daughter dreamed of going to Western. She was on her way to campus to study at the library when she was beaten.

“She will be missed and she was very much loved. And it’s a big loss,” Pina Nenonen said.

As of Thursday, London police had not brought any charges in the collision.
