China won its first gold medal at the 2022 World Championships in Athletics in the United States, and coming to the center of the podium to receive it was none other than an alumnus of our own Nanjing Normal University.

Wang Jianan won gold in the men’s long jump at the championships held at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon yesterday (July 17) with a giant leap of 8.36 meters.

But it had been a close call. Behind Wang, Greek legend and reigning Olympic champion Miltiadis Tentoglou was waiting to make his final jump. Another good one, but at 8.20 meters, just enough to win silver.

In the process, Wang became the winner of China’s first gold medal at the 2022 World Championships in Athletics and its first-ever gold medal in the long jump discipline of the Championships.

Wang, a native of Shenyang, capital of Liaoning Province, graduated from the School of Physical Education of Nanjing Normal University, often colloquially abbreviated as “Nanshida”, in 2018.

Yesterday, school dean Shi Shusheng witnessed Wang’s victory and remembered his time at Nanshida with great emotion.

In Shi’s eyes, Wang is a sunny boy, a bit shy, very discreet but very hardworking. “Every day he was there at 2 p.m. busy studying and training,” Shi said.

Many will also find inspiration in Wang’s story, as when he came to Nanshida, his performance was actually far from excellent, but through hard training, he continued to improve.

In 2015, then barely 18 years old, Wang won bronze at the World Championships in Athletics, at his home in Beijing.

From then on, training harder and harder, Wang finished fifth in the men’s long jump at the Rio Olympics in 2016 and 2 years later became champion at the Asian Games in Jakarta.

While at Nanjing Normal University, Wang often exchanged skills and ideas about athletics with his classmates. In the eyes of his young peers, he was seen as a positive and optimistic big brother, reports the Nanjing Daily.

In recent years, a number of top athletes have emerged from Nanshida, including weightlifter Lu Haojie; and volleyball players Hui Ruoqi, Zhang Changning and Gong Xiangyu. The dean said, “These are all excellent talents cultivated by Nanjing Normal University; we hope that young students can follow their example and inherit the sportsmanship”.

Wang’s victory in Oregon is also a birthday present for Nanshida. the institute celebrates its 120 years of education this year.
