IISER Pune to become a research-centric “Liberal Science University”

The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Pune is striving to become a research-focused “Liberal Science University”, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said on Friday 27 may. The Minister of Education attended a presentation on the academic and research activities undertaken by the institute today.

Taking to Twitter, the Minister of Education said, “Witnessed a presentation on academic and research activities undertaken by IISER Pune with BoG, Shri @sudhirmehtapune, Prof. Jayant Udgaonkar and other top academics. Glad to hear that IISER Pune is striving to become a research-centric “liberal science university”.

Dharmendra Pradhan also suggested that the institute also focus on developing quality audio-video learning content and explore ideas such as “Alumni Connect” to engage institute alumni to do advancing quality education as well as creating a vibrant and diverse pool of knowledge.

He further encouraged IISER Pune to become a greener and zero-carbon campus with in-house waste recycling and waste-to-energy units. IISER should also consider launching new courses tailored to the current and future needs of society and humanity, he said.

Pradhan laid the foundation stone for the new data science department at IISER Pune and also inaugurated the building of the National Center for Genetic Function in Health and Diseases, the Ministry of Education said.
