A university maths student from Bury has amassed over 100,000 followers on social media platform TikTok with his study and review videos.
Harry Surplus, from Bury, started making TikTok videos when coronavirus restrictions were in place, but only started making his maths teacher videos in October 2021.
The 19-year-old is currently in his second year at the University of Manchester where he is studying maths, but he mentioned the subject hasn’t always been his favorite subject.
He said, “Surprisingly, math wasn’t one of my favorite subjects during my early high school years.
“Once I was told at school that I didn’t deserve a certain grade on an exam, and another student did.
“It pushed me to do even better.
“My love and interest in the subject came when I transferred classes to a new teacher.
“The way she taught the material, engaged the students and her knowledge of the material completely inspired me.
“I started working before class at home, I was excited to go to math class. I managed to get to the next level in maths and got a ninth year GCSE.
“I think it all really started from there and ever since then I’ve always wanted to teach math.”
Harry attended Unsworth Academy (formerly Castlebrook High School) and then studied A-Level Maths, Further Maths and Drama Studies at Holy Cross College.
He added: “I can relate to students who are also struggling – because I have been in their shoes. I think that’s what makes me so passionate.
“I know that with hard work, a positive mindset, and determination, anyone can be successful in math.”
When Harry started making his TikTok videos, he didn’t expect them to go viral because he was just making them for fun.
However, he said he thinks they’re going viral because he’s actually teaching math, which a lot of people don’t actually realize.
So students learn math while scrolling on TikTok instead of revising.
The second video Harry made was for GCSE Maths and it was the first to go viral.

He said: “The video quickly reached over a million views and got so much attention. It was truly an overnight thing!
“Over 12,000 comments were received from students saying they learned more from these videos than they ever learned in school!
“I think it’s amazing and I’m so proud to be able to help so many students. I am so happy to be able to share my enthusiasm for the subject, and for students to feel my passion through the videos.
As well as his teacher-style videos, he makes live videos where he reviews past GCSE and A Level papers and thousands of students join regularly where they can learn and ask questions.
Harry hopes to one day become a teacher and soon begins a teaching internship.
He said, “I always wanted to be a teacher, ever since I was young!
“But it wasn’t until I started loving math that I knew I wanted to teach it. I’m teaching GCSEs at the moment, and I love helping students do their best, it’s great.
One of his high school math teachers has since messaged him to tell him how proud he was of him, and he keeps in touch with his high school tutor, Ms. Hanmer, who is also very proud.
He added, “I have so much fun making my teaching videos and knowing that they benefit thousands (sometimes millions of students!) is amazing.
“I get comments and messages from students telling me that they’ve finally figured out a subject, or achieved a higher grade in math thanks to my videos. It’s fantastic and really quite overwhelming!
“I can’t believe all these people follow me and want to learn from me.
“I must say that I only play a small role in the success of the students, and I thank them for watching and applauding them for their successes, because I know how amazing it is to finally understand or move on. next level. note.”
